## When the 2027 rate will be announced

The IRS sets next year's standard mileage rates once a year, normally in a December notice. Recent announcements:

- **2026 rates:** announced December 2025 (then raised mid-year from July 1, 2026).
- **2025 rates:** announced December 2024.
- **2024 rates:** announced December 2023.

## How the IRS sets the rate

The business rate comes from an annual study of what it costs to run a car: fuel, maintenance, tires, insurance, registration and depreciation. When those costs rise, the rate rises. Fuel is the most volatile piece, which is why sharp gas price spikes triggered the rare mid-year increases in 2022 and 2026.

## Business mileage rate history

| Year | Business rate |
| --- | --- |
| 2026 (Jul–Dec) | 76.0¢ |
| 2026 (Jan–Jun) | 72.5¢ |
| 2025 | 70.0¢ |
| 2024 | 67.0¢ |
| 2023 | 65.5¢ |
| 2022 (Jul–Dec) | 62.5¢ |
| 2022 (Jan–Jun) | 58.5¢ |

## How to prepare for 2027

- **Log every trip with its date.** The rate is applied later; an incomplete log can't be fixed.
- **Close out 2026 with a split-year calculation.** Miles before July 1 use 72.5¢, miles after use 76¢. The [mileage deduction calculator](https://mileafy.com/mileage-deduction-calculator) handles the split.
- **Check your log meets IRS requirements**: date, destination, purpose and miles for each trip. See [what your records must include](https://mileafy.com/irs-mileage-log-requirements-what-your-records-must-include-in-2026).
- **Automate it.** An automatic tracker such as Mileafy records each drive in the background, so the new rate just multiplies a complete log.
