**Source:** [GSA privately owned vehicle mileage rates](https://www.gsa.gov/travel/mileage-reimbursements), 41 CFR Part 301-10 Subpart D | **Effective:** July 1, 2026 | **Updated:** November 2026

The GSA mileage rate for 2026 is **76 cents per mile** when a federal traveler uses their own car for official travel on or after July 1, 2026. From January 1 to June 30, 2026, the rate was **72.5 cents**.

The General Services Administration (GSA) publishes these privately owned vehicle (POV) rates under the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR). Your agency uses them to reimburse you on a travel voucher. There are four rates, not one: which applies depends on the vehicle and on whether a government car was available to you.

## GSA Mileage Rates From July 1, 2026

| Vehicle | When it applies | Rate per mile |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Automobile** | Your agency authorized your car, or no government car was authorized or available | **$0.76** |
| Automobile | A government car was authorized and available, but you chose your own | $0.235 |
| Motorcycle | Any official travel | $0.74 |
| Airplane | Any official travel | $1.935 |
| Automobile, relocation | Moving for the job (PCS / relocation) | $0.235 |

## GSA Mileage Rates January 1 – June 30, 2026

| Vehicle | Rate per mile |
| --- | --- |
| **Automobile** | **$0.725** |
| Automobile, government car available | $0.205 |
| Motorcycle | $0.705 |
| Airplane | $1.78 |

The rate follows the **date of travel**. A trip on June 30, 2026 is paid at 72.5¢; the same trip on July 1, 2026 is paid at 76¢. If your voucher covers both months, each leg uses its own rate.

> Check with your agency's travel office before you drive. Reimbursement can depend on whether your POV was authorized or approved for the trip.

## Which GSA Rate Applies to Your Trip?

**Full rate (76¢).** You get the full automobile rate when your agency authorized the POV as advantageous to the government, or when no government car was authorized or available (41 CFR 301-10.301).

**Constructive rate (23.5¢).** If a government-furnished automobile was authorized and available and you drove your own car anyway, you are paid a constructive rate limited to what the government car would have cost (41 CFR 301-10.306). It is about a third of the full rate, so ask before you take your own car.

**Motorcycle and airplane.** Each has its own rate. For aircraft, distance comes from FAA charts and must be converted from nautical to statute miles (1 NM = 1.15077945 statute miles).

## How to Calculate GSA Mileage Reimbursement

**Miles driven × GSA rate on the travel date + tolls and parking = reimbursement**

**Example:** On August 12, 2026, you drive 118 miles round trip to a field office in your own car, with no government car available. You pay $9 for parking and $4.50 in tolls.

| Item | Amount |
| --- | --- |
| 118 miles × $0.76 | $89.68 |
| Parking | $9.00 |
| Tolls | $4.50 |
| **Total reimbursement** | **$103.18** |

If a government car had been available and you chose your own, the mileage part would be 118 × $0.235 = **$27.73**.

**Distance.** For a car or motorcycle, the FTR accepts either the distance from a standard highway mileage guide (paper or electronic) or the actual miles driven from your odometer (41 CFR 301-10.300). A GPS log of the trip is the easiest way to back up the actual miles.

## What Else Is Reimbursed Besides Mileage

On top of the per-mile rate, the FTR allows (41 CFR 301-10.302):

- Parking fees
- Ferry fees
- Bridge, road and tunnel tolls
- For airplanes: parking, landing and tie-down fees

Fuel, oil, repairs, insurance and depreciation are **not** reimbursed separately. They are already built into the per-mile rate.

**Carpooling:** if two employees ride in the same POV on the same trip, mileage is paid to only one of them (41 CFR 301-10.303). Passengers chipping in for gas does not reduce the driver's reimbursement.

## GSA vs. IRS Mileage Rate in 2026

| Period | GSA automobile | IRS business | GSA, gov't car available | IRS medical / moving |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Jul 1 – Dec 31, 2026 | 76¢ | 76¢ | 23.5¢ | 23.5¢ |
| Jan 1 – Jun 30, 2026 | 72.5¢ | 72.5¢ | 20.5¢ | 20.5¢ |

The numbers line up, but the rates do different jobs:

- **GSA rates** set what federal agencies **pay** their travelers for official travel.
- **IRS rates** set what self-employed people can **deduct** and the most a private employer can reimburse tax-free under an accountable plan.

Private companies are not bound by GSA rates. Most use the IRS business rate. See [IRS Mileage Rate 2026](https://mileafy.com/irs-mileage-rate-2026) for the medical, charity and moving rates and how to calculate a deduction.

## Keeping a Mileage Record for Your Travel Voucher

Your voucher is filed in your agency's travel system, but you still need the trip details to fill it in: date, start and end points, purpose, miles, and any tolls or parking.

An automatic mileage tracker does the logging for you. [Mileafy](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mileage-tracker-log-mileafy/id1598313408?ct=blog-gsa-rate) records every drive in the background with the date, start and end address, GPS route and distance. You can:

- Add the trip purpose, tolls and parking to each drive
- Create a custom rate such as "GSA 76¢" or "GSA gov't car 23.5¢" so totals match your voucher
- Export a PDF or CSV of the period to copy into your claim

## Frequently Asked Questions

**What is the GSA mileage rate for 2026?** For official travel on or after July 1, 2026, the GSA rate for a privately owned automobile is 76 cents per mile. From January 1 to June 30, 2026 it was 72.5 cents. The rate that applies is the one in effect on the date of travel.

**Who uses the GSA mileage rate?** Federal civilian employees and other travelers covered by the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) who use their own car, motorcycle or plane for official government travel. Private employers are not required to use it.

**Is the GSA mileage rate the same as the IRS mileage rate?** The GSA automobile rate matches the IRS business standard mileage rate: 76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026 and 72.5 cents before that. The lower GSA rate for when a government car was available (23.5 cents) matches the IRS medical and moving rate.

**Why is the GSA rate only 23.5 cents per mile for some trips?** If your agency authorized and offered a government-furnished automobile but you chose to drive your own car, you are paid a constructive rate limited to what the government car would have cost (41 CFR 301-10.306). From July 1, 2026 that rate is 23.5 cents per mile.

**Are tolls and parking reimbursed on top of the GSA mileage rate?** Yes. Parking fees, ferry fees, and bridge, road and tunnel tolls are reimbursed in addition to mileage (41 CFR 301-10.302). Fuel, repairs, insurance and depreciation are already covered by the per-mile rate.

**Can two federal employees in the same car both claim mileage?** No. When employees share a privately owned vehicle on the same trip, mileage is paid to only one traveler (41 CFR 301-10.303).

**Can federal employees deduct unreimbursed mileage on their tax return?** Generally no. W-2 employees, including federal employees, cannot deduct unreimbursed business mileage on their federal return. Narrow exceptions include Armed Forces reservists and fee-basis government officials.
